Intermediate switches are required when three or more switches are needed to
control a light fitting and are used in conjunction with two way switches.
For example, if you require three light switches to operate a ceiling pendant,
you would need 2 x two way switches and 1 x intermediate switch.
If you required five light switches to operate a ceiling pendant,
you would need 2 x two way and 3 x intermediate.
Intermediate switches in the UK are sometimes called three way switches.
